Penang, Malaysia

From Singapore we went to Penang in Malaysia to visit some friends. Georgetown has some nice buildings and cool street art.

While there we visited Entopia, which is an Entomological Utopia.  It really was! They have a very large butterfly area and several other animals. Plus lots of educational information.

Chameleon, frog and scorpion.

Stick insect and leaf insect.

Lizards.

And so many butterflies!

Summer bugs

Here are some of the cool bug pictures taking during this summer.

A cool moth.

Cute and furry caterpillars.

Other insects.

Some flowers and scenery. I think the dead leaf on the tree looks like a dog.

A very cute jumping spider.

And a pretty blue butterfly in Seoul.

And that brings me up to date with this blog! I will try and update it more regularly in future.

First hike post broken leg

For my first hike after recovering from leg surgery, we went up Tsukuba-san, Japan in August.

We took the gondola up.

img_3160

And the cable car down.

img_3221We saw some nice Japanese scenery.

And some insects.

Cicadas and dragonflies.

Butterflies.

And my favourite butterflies, swallowtails.

And this really big dragonfly. Unfortunately, it was really hard to catch on camera so the picture is not that good.

Summer is here

Summer is here now, which means it is unbearably hot. However, we have been lucky that it has not been hot until this week.

There have been plenty of bugs about. Here are a few pictures taken over the past few weeks.

On a random drive around we discovered a rocket tower.

IMG_1050

Around the base of the tower were hundreds of caterpillars and a few butterflies. The caterpillars were really cute so I took too many pictures of them.

The butterflies were pretty too.

IMG_1037

There have been a couple of nice beetles in our garden recently.

IMG_1073

There were many of these all over this bush. They were all in the same pose!

IMG_1074

On a recent day out, we came across a snake basking in the sunshine.

IMG_1083

And some butterflies doing the same.

Although this weather is good for seeing insects, I am looking forward to when it starts to cool down a little. Hopefully the heat won’t last too long.

Recent hiking trips

A few weeks ago we went hiking for the first time in Japan.

Andrew wrote a little about the hike here.

Here are a few more photos of the view. It was a beautiful day and the sky was incredibly blue.

Gondola and crazy mountain biker.

Unfortunately, we didn’t see many insects on this hike. There were still patches of snow around the top, so I think it was a bit too cold.

There was a ratty old butterfly.

IMG_0929

And a ladybird.

IMG_0946

But that was all for that hike.

——————

On 24 May we went hiking to a small mountain in our town. There was a mountain opening festival, including a brass band at the top. The poor middle school brass band students had to carry their instruments up the mountain!

There was a balloon release.

IMG_0980

But unfortunately some of them got stuck in the tree.

IMG_0984

It was a much better day for insects though. Here are some of them.

A swallowtail past its prime.

A long horn beetle. The picture is not so good, as I was being ushered downhill by the crowds at the time.

IMG_0997

A really pretty beetle with cool antennas.

IMG_1000

A very colourful caterpillar.

IMG_1005

A butterfly and beetle sharing a flower.

IMG_1009

And a better view of the beetle.

IMG_1011

Another ladybird.

IMG_1013

A pretty flower.

And an unusual looking plant.

At the end of May I went on a 12km hike with my school.

IMG_1021

The hike was quite easy, but 12km is a long way for 10 year olds. The weather was extremely hot so the students were very tired.

We walked to a lake.

IMG_1026

I saw quite a few insects, but didn’t have the chance to stop for any photos. However, I did manage to get a picture of the giant wasps nest we saw.

IMG_1035

And the snake!

Finally, a couple of pictures from my garden.

Yet another ladybird.

IMG_1015

A furry caterpillar.

A frog. They are very noisy around here in the evenings.

And some decorations I made for my classroom.

Bugs in Korea

Here are some pictures of bugs from hiking trips during May 2013 in Korea. These photos were all taken with my new Canon camera.

First, a couple of ladybirds.

IMG_0227

IMG_0375

Pine bark beetles are very common in the hills. They are well camoflauged for trunks of pine trees, where they usually hang out.

IMG_0298

A big wasp. Taking these pictures was a little scary – luckily I have quite a good zoom on my camera.

IMG_0303

IMG_0306

A big beetle, who really didn’t want to be outside the pine needles. It kept trying to get back under them, making it very difficult to take a photo.

IMG_0288

A hummingbird moth – these guys are very cool.

IMG_0350

A butterfly. I really like the way the colours show up on this picture.

IMG_0356

Some swallowtail pictures. These were my favourite insects growing up and I never thought I would live somewhere where I could see them every day.

IMG_0308

Mom and babies.

IMG_0393

Caterpillar eating – it’s what they do best!

IMG_0400

Pretty beetle.

IMG_0410

Another beetle. This picture is not so good, but the beetle has such cool antennas.

IMG_0413

Some more caterpillars eating.

IMG_0416

Ants farming their aphids. A good example of symbiosis.
